Toronto's Great War Attic

Beginning this weekend at the Fort York National Historic Site's new Visitor Centre, Toronto will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the First World War though a series of initiatives called
TORONTO'S GREAT WAR ATTIC

"Toronto's Museums & Heritage Services will pay tribute to the sacrifices made during the war on the battle front and at home in countries around the world. The stories, keepsakes and heirlooms associated with those who made these sacrifices have been passed down to their descendants living in Toronto today."

Toronto's Great War Attic will create a legacy for Torontonians for generations to come by documenting the stories and keepsakes with events and Pop-up Museums in heritage sites all over Toronto starting September 20/21 through to November 2018.

ABOUT THE PROJECT (via www.toronto.ca):
The First World War 1914 to 1918, known at the time as the Great War, shocked the world with its catastrophic global reach. Unlike the Toronto of 1914 to 1918 when the city’s population was 85 per cent British descent, at least half of today’s residents come from all over the world. There are more than 230 self-identified ethnic groups in our city.
Therefore, we have an unprecedented opportunity to collect personal stories and images of keepsakes and heirlooms passed down from many countries by those who lived through the war, either in military service or on the home front, to their descendants who are now living in Toronto.
Through such a collection, we can present the war from multiple perspectives - allied nations of Great Britain and Germany; neutral and colonial nations in Europe and Africa, which inadvertently served as battle zones; and life on the home front in lands directly under attack and others, such as Canada, which were never battle zones but whose populations contributed to the war effort.

September 19, 2014 - September 2015 - The Great War: in Your Cellar, Closet or Storage Locker!
This exhibition in the Fort York Visitor Centre's lobby draws on the City of Toronto's artifact collection to tell the story of typical small objects reflecting Canada's participation in the Great War.
September 19, 2014 - September 2015 - Outfitted for War: Canadian Uniforms and Weapons of the First World War
The Vault – is the setting for rarely or never seen before objects from the City's artifact collection. Outfitted for War consists of five display cases and associated text and image panels. Each of four vertical cases contains a uniform representing different forms of service by Torontonians during the Great War.

Jack Lux Vintage features the TVS Blogger Mannequins!

In case you haven't stopped in yet (many of us have already made multiple trips)...the JACK LUX Vintage Pop-up shop landed in Toronto back in July and has taken the vintage shopping community by storm!

We felt honoured when they contacted us for their Blogger Mannequin Initiative.  We were asked to dress 2 mannequins to be featured in their shop window at 536 Queen St West starting Sept 12th until the 19th!

Bloggers throughout Toronto were approached for this initiative. The mannequins will rotate weekly.

For our mannequins - we wanted different lengths, textures and eras...we also wanted the mannequins to be eye catching in the shop windows!  In hindsight, we should have dressed a male mannequin as an homage to all the great TVS men in Toronto...but sorry guys we simply squealed and ran around the store pulling just about everything down from the racks!

2 other bloggers on the Toronto Vintage Society
team were approached to style mannequins, see them here:
Liz's from The Vintage Inn and
Shermy's from Shermette!

Liz wearing her Fall ready shirt waisted dress -
newly acquired from Jack Lux of course!

Shermy hanging out with her signature styled technicolor mannequins!

This history of how the company came about is quite interesting too.....

"Jack Lux has one of the largest vintage collections in Canada, having acquired most of

the collection from Centre National du Costume, a costuming trust established by the

Quebec Government.  The CNC curated and identify a wide and diverse range vintage

clothing dating between the 1920s and 1990s.  The collection was used by filmmakers and

production houses that were shooting in the province of Quebec. In 2005, the organization

was dismantled and Jack Lux was able to acquire the vast collection — which at last

count included more than 200, 000 items of men and women’s apparel and accessories."

With a successful Montreal business flourishing, they decided to bring over 5000 pieces to Toronto and open a pop-up shop located at 536 Queen St West. With shout outs from BlogTO, Now Magazine, She Does the City and many more it's no wonder that everyone is talking about this shop that is chocked to it's rafters with vintage!

The company also has a strong team backing it in both cities, Both the PR manager Micki and store manager Jason have been friendly and lovely to work with!

Jack Lux plans to stay in town until October - hopefully we can bring you an exclusive shopping opportunity...and just in time for Hallowe'en!

Stay tuned!

TIFF - Where Film, Celebrities, and Vintage All Make an Appearance!

We have hit the midway point for Toronto's film and celebrity event of the year -
The TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!

When we think of film we instantly invoke dreamy visions of the golden era.  TIFF helps us to bring that glamour to our city streets for 10 days every fall.

While most celebrities flock to snap up a modern designs,  a select few hit up our vintage shops for a breathe of something unique....

No one dresses local celebs for TIFF better than the every-so-sweet and stylish Tao from Cabaret Vintage

The Cabaret Ladies (left to right): Lara Jean Chrostecki (2013 - but had to inlude this 1940s gown!), Katie Boland at the Producers Ball, Lara Jean again at the Producers Ball, Melanie Scrofano and Meghan Heffern.

The Cabaret Gents (left to right): Eric Johnson and Emmanual Kabongo

Here is a brief history of the event and how Toronto has become a respected force, helping to shape the world's cinematique landscape:

************

From www.TIFF.net
TIFF began in 1976 as the "Festival of Festivals," collecting the best films from other film festivals around the world and showing them to eager audiences in Toronto. That first year, 35,000 enthusiasts watched 127 films from 30 countries.
By 2012, those numbers have grown to feature 372 films from 72 countries, enjoyed by over 400,000 people. The Festival of Festivals (renamed the Toronto International Film Festival® in 1995) has introduced many of the world's great film artists to Toronto audiences. In the years that followed, many other artists have looked back on the Festival as the place where their films first reached a receptive audience and the foundations of their careers were built.
The secret of the Festival's success is its unique combination of two parallel festivals: one for a large audience passionate about film and one for the world's press and industry. The Festival also manages to be the launch pad for both big Hollywood films and art house cinema from around the world.
In 2010, TIFF opened TIFF Bell Lightbox, a unique centre for the appreciation of film in the heart of downtown Toronto. TIFF Bell Lightbox features five cinemas, two restaurants, major exhibitions, and learning and entertainment facilities. TIFF has remained committed to educating and broadening audiences, adding to the cultural richness of Canada’s community. Along the way, TIFF has become one of the most important and respected film institutions in the world.
************

We look to be inspired by the films, by the messages, the stories, the art of cinematography...but who can help themselves from wanting to catch a glimpse of the red carpet style?
When you do finally break down and "accidentally" sidle up King St - GLAMOUR is what you are hoping to find along the way. We hope to find a hint of that by-gone era...I mean if Hollywood can't bring it  - who can?!
Here are some of the visiting Hollywood celebrities who chose to wear vintage inspired styles:
